COURT SERVICES

On March 11, 2005, Brian Nichols was on trial for Rape at the Fulton County Courthouse when he overpowered a Deputy and took her firearm. During his subsequent escape, three people, including a judge, a court reporter and a Deputy Sheriff were murdered. A Federal Agent was later murdered at his home.

In the wake of this tragedy, the Greene County Sheriff's Office reviewed security policies and made several changes to how security functions at the Greene County Courthouse, including the installation of metal detectors and an X-Ray machine. Court Services is now responsible for ensuring that all court personnel, inmates and members of the general public are safe while conducting business in the building by using these new tools and carefully controlled electronic card access to visitors and employees.

Lieutenant Keith Powell served as a Military Police Officer in the United States Air Force before working at the Monticello Police Department. He transferred to the Greene County Sheriff's Office in 1997 where he held high level positions in the Patrol Division and Criminal Investigations before being appointed as the Commander of Court Services.
